Amawheelagirls claim Silver at the 2020 Paralympic Qualifiers

The Senior National Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team, the Amawheelagirls, claimed the silver medal at the 2020 IWBF Afro Qualifiers held at the Vodacom Mandeville Indoor Sports Center in Johannesburg between 1-8 March 2020.

The last minute withdrawals of Kenya and Morocco saw the Women’s event at the 2020 IWBF Afro Paralympic Qualifiers, reduced to just two teams, Algeria and South Africa.

The tournament format was changed to a best of 5 game series.

Algeria the reigning African Champions were loaded with highly experienced and talented veteran players with World Championship and Paralympic experience behind them and this experienced proved far too much for the more young and inexperienced Amawheelagirls, who were convincingly beaten 5-0 in the series, with Algeria moving on to represent Africa at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

It was however very encouraging to see the fast development of some of the younger Amawheelagirls, who have a long term goal in qualifying for the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
